Failure is an obstacle, no doubt. It can lead us down two different roads: the road to something greater or the road to feeling sorry for ourselves. We have to make a decision ahead of time that we’re going to push through whatever stands between us and our dreams.

If you decide it’s too late for you to achieve success, you’re right.

If you decide there’s still hope for you to live your best life, you’re right.

According to Gay Hendricks, author of The Big Leap, “Each of us has an inner thermostat setting that determines how much love, success, and creativity we allow ourselves to enjoy.”

Megan Hyatt Miller, co-host of the Lead to Win Podcast, responds to that quote, saying,

“That’s a really sobering thought, because what it means is we’re going to sabotage ourselves once we hit that upper limit.”

There’s that nasty word… sabotage. We sabotage because we believe the lie that we don’t deserve success. No? Just me? Okay…

Miller says, “When we exceed our inner thermostat setting, we will often do something to sabotage ourselves, causing us to drop back into the old, familiar zone where we feel secure.

Comfort can kill us if you really think about it. Think of someone who continues to relapse. They desperately want to stop using. No one wakes up one day and says, “I can’t wait to be an addict when I grow up.” They get clean and sober for a while, but then life starts to get hard. So.. they do what is comfortable to them, even when using isn’t what they really want deep down inside. They sabotage everything good because success is out of their comfort zone.

That’s why it’s key for us to continue stepping outside of our comfort zones and finding our new normal. Though we may feel secure in the old things, it doesn’t mean it’s where we’re meant to be.

When you’re dropping back into the old, familiar zone it’s because you’re not believing the truth about who you really are. It’s here we must go back to the truth.

Confront the lie. Speak the truth. Push past the limits.

“The main thing standing between you and your greatest goal may be you. You can achieve more than you think, so don’t be afraid to reimagine your life and take the big leap to get there.” – Megan Hyatt Miller

Here are some questions to consider as you dig deeper into uncovering your upper limit problem:

  1. Can you think of a time in your life where you sabotaged your success?
  2. What do you think the limiting belief(s) was?
  3. What steps must you take to not stay comfortable in your old zone of false security?
