Think about something you enjoy. Something you love to make part of your daily or weekly routine. Got it?
Okay – now go with me…

Can you imagine giving that something up? Does the thought of letting go make your cringe at that question?

Let me ask it again…

Can you imagine giving that something up?

Since taking a deeper look at my life after reading Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, and putting my life up for sale, I’ve also taken another step based on David Platt’s recommendation in the book.
He actually recommends taking five actions and committing one year to them.

  1. Pray for the entire world
  2. Read through the entire Word
  3. Sacrifice your money for a specific purpose
  4. Spend your time in another context
  5. Commit your life to a multiplying community

I won’t lie and say that I have kept my commitment to all the above mentioned actions. I’m currently working through step two. I’m asking God to show me what to do with step four. I’m committed to step five by staying involved with the women at the Table Rock Freedom Center. Step one I must admit is a lack of remembering. I must do better.
The third action is where He spoke to me the clearest. I’m a coffee drinker. Believe it or not, I can’t have caffeine, but I still love to drink coffee. I love decaf mocha’s from my favorite little coffee shop and I love sugar-free hazelnut latte’s from Starbucks. God showed me what my sacrifice was to be.
For the next year, I will not buy specialty coffee drinks. The only way I can have them is if someone treats me. I cannot ask for it either. I don’t write this to say, “Look at me. I’m sacrificing something. Aren’t you proud?”
I write this today because I want to challenge you to do the same. What could that money be spent on instead?
Missions. Orphanages. Homeless shelters.
There’s a ton of things you could think about and come up with. I’m excited about this opportunity. I know I will appreciate the sweet taste of chocolate and hazelnut even more when the chance arrives to enjoy them.
But I enjoy Jesus more.
I want something greater. That comes through obedience. Will you join me on the journey of sacrifice?
Comment below… What’s that one thing you could go without for a year?
