In July I promised you I was going to share my weight loss results since signing up with a personal trainer. I’m keeping my promise, even though it scares me to death to “pour it all out there.”
On August 1 Kim weighed me in and recorded my measurements and body fat. I never took my measurements at the beginning of my 145 lb. weight loss in 2008, but I do know I went from a size 30 to a size 16. Kim and I agreed I would only weigh in once per month so the scale wouldn’t be my focus. I must admit it’s been a bit hard, but I’ve managed.
Here’s where I started:
August Weigh-In and Measurements
Weight: 223.6
Body Fat: 41.9
Neck : 15
Shoulder: 49.5
Chest: 44.5
Upper Arm: 16
Waist: 41
Hip: 52.5
Thigh: 32
Calf: 19.25
I started using myfitnesspal again, which has really helped in keeping in tune with what I’m eating each month. If you’re not familiar, it tracks your food, calories, etc.
I had some ups and downs with my body, which isn’t anything new. I had my period twice, which may linked to some stress going on. Then the last week of August my grandma wound up in the hospital, so I traveled to be with her. I went four days without exercise, didn’t have the greatest food options, which resulted in constipation.
By the time September 1 came I wasn’t sure what to expect. The morning of weigh-in I was bloated. I knew my clothes were looser, but I wasn’t sure what the results would be. Then I hit the scale. I gained a pound. Okay, maybe it’s muscle. Then she measured my body fat and I gained 1.4 oz of body fat. Okay, now I want to crawl in a hole and cry.
I have to blog about this. I have to tell people that I just gained 1.4 oz of body fat! What am I supposed to do?
Then she took my measurements.
September Results
Weight: 224.6 (+1.0)
Body Fat: 43.3 (+1.4)
Neck: 14 (-1)
Shoulder: 47.5 (-2)
Chest: 43 (-2)
Upper Arm: 14.5 (-1.5)
Waist: 41 (No Change)
Hip: 52 (-0.5)
Thigh: 28 (-4.0)
Calf: 16 (-3.25)
I lost 12.75 inches! Four of those inches were in my thighs. I couldn’t believe it. That would certainly explain why my clothes were fitting better.
I talked to her about the weight gain and body fat increase. Due to the ups and downs with my hormones and the constipation, the scale isn’t going to accurately state my results.
Other Highlights of the Month
I’ve done exercises I didn’t know my body could do, thanks to Kim taking me out of my comfort zone. I did a pull-up (assisted), but nonetheless, a pull-up. I hung my arms from some strap thingy and pulled my legs up to my stomach. That was awesome!
And I think it’s possible I may now have buns-of-steel.
Focusing on the #nextrightstep has changed my life. And the results are showing it.
Stay tuned for details in October. I’m excited to share.
[reminder]What progress have you made in the last month? Don’t by shy. Let’s celebrate together! [/reminder]
That’s incredible Sundi Jo! I think the inches are more important than the scale! You’re very brave and inspiring to put your stats up for all to see. Thanks for doing that hard step for an example to us!
Thanks, Kim. The inches certainly made me smile! 🙂
Awesome work Sundi Jo! Your hard work, consistency and determination are your biggest ally. You are going to continue to NAIL your goals! 🙂
Couldn’t do it without you.
Those are amazing results!! Way to work for it! Can I hire you as my personal trainer?!
Not sure how good I would be, but I’m happy to share with you everything I learn.
I’ve been told that I’m not seeing results because it’s time to incorporate weights. What do you think? Is this something I should take on, on my own?
Totally. That’s what’s been so powerful since I’ve started training. Most of what I’m doing is strength training, which includes weights. I always thought that was just to get ginormous muscles, but it’s not. It’s used to burn fat and create lean muscle mass, which is why I’m losing more inches than pounds in the beginning.
I actually used Jillian Michaels’ circuit training app before I went with a personal trainer, so I could have some guidance on what to do. http://www.jillianmichaels.com/fit/mobile-tools-app-iphone
Wow. That is so good. Thank you for sharing. You’re brave to share, but I can see how this is going to motivate you. I don’t understand. Have you already lost the weight (I see a thinner you on the sitting photo) or are you losing it now? Most importantly, how is your grandmother?
Wait a minute? Wait a minute? Do you live at Eureka Springs? I love that place and go there every year.
Chris, I’ve already lost 145 lbs. 4 years ago. I’m trying to lost the rest now that I’ve started with the personal trainer. I actually live in Branson, Mo.
Maybe we can meet in Eureka Springs next year when I visit. That would be great. We can enjoy the Mud Cafe.
Sounds great.
Good for you! I can’t believe you are sharing so openly- WOW! Keep going. 🙂
Thanks, Joy.
Those are awesome results! the weight will change later. But I know for me the weight in the arms and thighs would make me happy.
Yes, Mary, you’re right. Because of my funky hormones, my weight constantly goes up and down.
Have you ever tried essential oils? My friend used an oil blend that she applied to her thyroid (neck area) a few times during the day and she told me she just started shedding the weight when it had been at a stand still. she was also using an eating plan and exorcising, but when she started the oils she saw significant results. She swears it helped her hair and her monthly cycle adjust.
I personally love essential oils and have found that they help me stay balanced very well. I do not personally know much about this blend but I can tell you about it if you want to know.
Mary, I’ve used the lemon essential oil. I’ve heard that from more than one person, actually. I’d love to know the blend, if you don’t mind. You can shoot me an email at info [at] sundijo.com
Awesome results! Such a great example that the scale doesn’t always tell us the truth. Look at all of those inches you lost while gaining 1 lb! Great job!! This type of thing is the main reason I do measurements and try not to sweat what the scale says.
Thanks, Stephani. You’re so right. Glad we don’t listen to the scale everyday.
I have decided to only get my scale out once a month too. It’s just a number and it really has no purpose, other than encourage or discourage. Committing to eating right and exercise is where it really counts. I am more than a number!
Yes you are!
Thank you for sharing your struggles and successes and for being vulnerable. It’s encouraging.
Thanks, Tammy.
