I was going through my morning devotion on the Abide app, which I absolutely love by the way, and we were covering Matthew 22:37-38. The shortened Sundi Jo version – love God with every part of you.

One of the ways I hear from God most is through journaling. I ask questions. I wait for Him to answer. Then I write them down. Sometimes I don’t shut up long enough for Him to give me answers, so I find myself doing more talking. This particular morning I was actually quiet enough to hear Him.

As I was meditating on loving Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, He brought the five senses to mind: smell, touch, hearing, taste and sight. And with each sense, He gave me a Scripture to match up. Sometimes I’m just amazed at His goodness and how He always shows up at just the right time.

Since the whole black mold debacle, memorizing and remembering things like Scripture is ten times harder for me. But as I was processing through these five senses, Scripture just began to show up faster than I could write it down. God is so awesome!

I’m excited to break it down for you. Here are some Scriptures to line up with the five senses God has blessed us with.

Smell. The Fragrance of Christ.

Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:15

Touch. He holds me in the palm of His hand. He holds me by my right hand.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:13

For I hold you by your right hand— I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you. Isaiah 41:10

Hearing. His sheep hear His voice.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

Taste. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Psalm 34:8

Sight. He gives sight to the blind.

The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are weighed down. The Lord loves the godly. Psalm 146:8

I know this isn’t an exhaustive list, but these are the verses God immediately brought to my mind.

Here’s my prayer for us today:

Father, help us to love you with all of our senses. Help us to love others knowing we are loved so deeply by You. May we not live by rules and regulations, but by obedience that comes from our deep love for you. May others around us smell the fragrance of you on us. May Your love show up through a hug. May we quiet ourselves enough to hear You. May we taste and know that You are so good. And give us eyes to see others through Your eyes. In the mighty name of Jesus, amen!
