There is a secret to getting healthy. It’s a well-kept secret, really. People from all walks of life wake up everyday desiring to know the secret.
Women look in the mirror, see a person they don’t want to know, and desperately seek the answer to the secret. Teenage girls get laughed at, only to go home later and journal about their desire to know the secret. Men want to know the secret too.
I’m letting you in on the secret.
I’m guest posting for Tammy today over at Embrace Your Story.

Last June, I made a decision. I decided to step off the roller coaster. I had had enough. No more ups and downs. No more mountains and valleys. It was making me sick. I felt awful.

My roller coaster was the cycle of dieting I had been on for years since having my kids. Heck, I’d been riding it for most of my adult life. However, before kids, I was traditionally much more active and worked out somewhat consistently. But, since those little blessings came along, I had found every excuse in the book to not make time to workout.

What’s keeping you from making those things happen? Is your weight part of the problem? Let me tell that if your weight is keeping you from pursuing dreams and passions,
I understand how you feel.
I understand because I once was there. The frustrations of the ups and downs of weight loss. The yo-yo diets. The shame behind a food addiction. Avoiding people because we’re not happy with who we are. Pretending to be funny and the star of the show so the real focus isn’t on what’s going on behind the laughter.

Many of us look at exercise as only a way to lose weight. Because of that, we can easily look past the many other benefits workouts can have. One of those benefits is boosting the mind.
I ran across an article from Real Simple Magazine on some great exercises I wanted to share with you. Here are five ways to strengthen your mind through exercise:
- Yoga – It has been linked to reducing anxiety, increasing oxygen flow. I didn’t realize when I first started doing yoga, just how important breathing was. It turns out that it’s key into doing this exercise successfully. As my favorite yoga DVD says, “When you stop breathing, you stop practicing yoga.” One of my favorite ways to do this brain boosting exercise is from the DVD, Yahweh Yoga, provided by my friend and blogger Robyn Hurst. Produced by Gentle Journey, it’s 45 minutes worth of Christ-centered Yoga. Click here to check it out and purchase your copy.
- Pilates – Studies show that doing this exercise, created in the 1920’s was not only linked to relaxation, but improved sleep as well. I have done it for a while, but perhaps I should try again.
- Cycling – Though I have never participated, nor do I plan to, I completely respect those who do. If you can survive it, your energy levels are sure to increase.
- Weight Lifting – Of course lifting weights provides toning for your muscles, but according to this article, the ability to plan, regulate behavior, and multitask all increased.
- Tai Chi – Ok – this is on my list of things to do. This form of martial art originating in China your mind relaxes and your muscles calm. Who’s on board with me?
