Jesus, Sex, Dinosaurs and Banana Pudding

Jesus, Sex, Dinosaurs and Banana Pudding

This past Sunday I didn’t have lunch with the usual crowd. We didn’t eat at the usual place.

I sat around the table at IHOP with a former food addict, a gentleman who served in Iraqi Freedom, a 19-year old girl adopted from the country of Colombia,  a three-year old, dinosaur-loving kid, a woman who once chose alcohol and drugs over taking care of her son, and a man who once ruled the streets of his city as a gang member and drug dealer.

I’ve always been a little jealous of Adam. I imagine him running around in his birthday suit in a lush, beautiful garden, eating giant grapes, naming peacocks and koala bears, and playing games with the local wildlife.

“Red rover, red rover, let the cheetah come over!”
As soon as that routine grew boring, one Sunday afternoon after the Father delivered a fantastic sermon and he enjoyed a huge meal, Adam plopped down on the couch in his man cave and took a long nap. Afterwards, he awoke to a hot woman in her birthday suit who wanted nothing more than to spend all her time with him. Now that’s my idea of a Sunday. No man in his right mind gets bored of that. He had it made.

Waiting for Answers

Waiting for Answers

I was recently saying it would be great to go on a vacation. I must admit I didn’t think it would look at all like this.
I’ve been waited on hand and foot. Room service three times a day. The housekeeper changes my bed clothes daily. The smell of roses fill the air in my Penthouse room overlooking the city. What more could a girl ask for?

Ahhh.. But there’s a catch.

“Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself.” – Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz

In the movie Blue Like Jazz, when Don Miller speaks of watching someone love something, he’s speaking of a girl named Penny who loves Jesus and social justice and people.
Watching Don watch Penny reminded me of how I used to scrutinize a group of fellow college students my freshman year. I had never seen people love Jesus as boldly and deeply as those people did.

Hope Is Never Shattered {Re-Post}

Hope Is Never Shattered {Re-Post}

This post was originally published on August 17, 2012.
Today I have faced sadness, hope, triumph, and the gentle touch of God.
I drove a friend and mentor to his radiation treatments this afternoon. It was my honor and privilege to do so. I have been inspired by Sandy Steward and his walk in the faith. This is his third time in the ballgame of cancer and he’s refusing to strike out.
As we pulled into the parking lot of the treatment center a familiar feeling washed over me. I stepped into the waiting room and flashbacks filled my mind. Two chairs from where Sandy and I sat was the same place I sat with my father over a year ago. I remember staring at my “pop” as we waited for his name to be called for the first treatment. His leg was shaking 90 miles/hr. He was scared to death. So was I. Both of us were too prideful to admit it.

How People Pleasing Leads to Death

How People Pleasing Leads to Death

We all like to please people in one way or another. It’s part of our nature. I love to see the smiles on the faces of my loved ones when I do something that makes them proud. It warms my heart. I love to see people happy when I’ve been able to do something good for them, whether that’s giving them a simple hug or spending quality time with them.
What about when we get so stuck on pleasing others we’re actually harming them and ourselves?

When Jesus was turned over to Pilate to be crucified, he could find no fault in Jesus. But he had to worry about pleasing the Roman government. That’s why he was put into that position – to keep the peace. If he went against the people, all hell would break loose and word would get back to the Romans. Pilate was more concerned about politics than doing was was right.
