I still have friends that don’t understand what social media is. “It’s just a fad.” “I don’t want to twitter a tweet.” I’m not about to let people see my life on Facebook.” “I don’t have time to blog.”
I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. If you don’t want your family photographs on Facebook, no big deal. What bothers me though, is when others put social media down as a “stupid waste of time.” It’s not the opinion that bothers me, it’s the attitude behind it.
Social media has made a tremendous impact, both positive and negative. It’s not going anywhere soon. There may be negative aspects of the social media world, but isn’t there in everything we do?
For me, there has been more positive than negative. It’s helped me to create a platform with my writing. It is a ministry for me to reach out to many people at once that I may never get the chance to do otherwise. Sure, my life is pretty much an open book, but you know what?
If seeing my life unfold through the communication of Facebook, Twitter, and more, brings one person closer to pursuing their dreams, or better yet, a relationship with Christ, then bring it on!
Do we still need face-to-face interaction and connecting? Absolutely. But with social media there is the opportunity to build relationship and connect with others at a greater capacity. Relationships. It’s about relationships.
I have made several fantastic connections via social media that have turned into deep, meaningful relationships. My friend Lyn Smith is a prime example. We met because of social networking. Now she is more than just a twitter handle. She’s a friend I trust.
Yes, spammers are out there trying to sell us everything. Jerks misuse this avenue everyday. That won’t change. But you can filter out the bad to see the good. So, do we take advantage of the benefits of social media or do we toss it aside because we don’t understand it?
